Meet Derrick W. Cabiles
I was raised on Oʻahu alongside my four brothers and graduated from Aiea High School. I attended the University of Hawaiʻi through the Air Force ROTC program, where I learned the values of discipline, leadership, and service. After my parents moved to Maui, I fell in love with the island, its people, and its strong sense of community. Maui became my home.
My life’s work has been about keeping things moving behind the scenes. My professional background spans public safety, construction operations, small business ownership, and statewide logistics. I founded 5-D Fencing and later spent 17 years as a Manager for the Hawaiʻi Foodservice Alliance, where I helped oversee the critical operations and supply chains that keep food on the shelves across our islands. Today, you can find me behind the wheel of a Hana tour bus, navigating our island’s unique roads and listening directly to the stories, frustrations, and hopes of locals and visitors alike.
I am not a career politician, and I don't claim to have a picture-perfect story. Like so many families on Maui, I have felt the sting of our current economy firsthand—half of my children and grandchildren have had to leave the islands to seek opportunities elsewhere because living here has become unsustainable. I am running for County Council because I want to change that reality, so our next generation doesn't have to say goodbye to the home they love.
Maui County doesn't need more abstract political promises; it needs operational leadership. I am running to bring practical, common-sense management to our local government. My focus is on fixing our infrastructure, streamlining county services, and managing operations efficiently so that county government actually works for the people. I know how to listen to a team, run a tight operation, and execute a plan.
Together, we can stop managing decline and start building a functional, sustainable future for Maui County.
